Emoticons (or smileys) can be useful in conveying mood or emotion in written online communications where there are no visable clues to tell you that someone is speaking tongue in cheek or "pulling your leg" or is feeling impish. Emoticons are generally used only in casual (non-business) conversation and help to prevent misunderstanding when a statement could be construed differently than intended.
For example, you may make a statement that you think is obvious as a joke or something to be taken entirely without seriousness but without visual cues you have no way of ensuring that the reader of the statement will understand that it is a joke. Emoticons can help the reader realize the intent or context intended by the writer of the message or statement.
